Flotilla 16-6 is the Oklahoma
City Auxiliary branch of the 8 Western Rivers District of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Located in central Oklahoma, Flotilla 16-6 has many rich bodies of water to
utilize for training and to monitor for assistance to State, Local and Federal
agencies. The State of Oklahoma hosts many nationally renowned lakes, such as
Lake Tenkiller, Lake Texoma, and the Eufaula reservoir. Oklahoma City alone has
3 large lakes; Lake Stanley Draper, Lake Overholser, and Lake Hefner, all within
the city limits. Bordering area water systems include Lake Arcadia, Lake
Thunderbird, and the Canadian River system. Currently, the Canadian River has
undergone a major construction project to change it from a moderate stream
under nornal conditions to a navigable waterway. The part of the river that flows
directly through Oklahoma City has been renamed the "Oklahoma River".
It is plain to see that there is a lot of recreational water in Oklahoma, for a state
with no coast line. With so much usable acreage of water, there is a great need in central
Oklahoma for boater and water safety education.

| Did you know that Oklahoma City is home to the most inland
"working" lighthouse in the United States? The design was developed from a
historic lighthouse viewed by the owner on a trip to the East Coast, and
an exact scaled down replica was recreated on the Eastern Shore of Lake
Hefner. The "Lake Hefner Lighthouse" was constructed using revolutionary
construction techniques and has won awards for the building process. It is
the first of its kind to use a "Tilt-up" construction process. The
construction process was chosen over many possible methods because of its
lower initial cost, low maintenance requirements, and speed. Local artist
Greg Burns has captured the beauty of the "Lake Hefner Lighthouse" in the
amazing print shown above. Click on the picture of the lighthouse to see
more of his amazing work.
