The State of Oklahoma has signed into law a bill that made boating safety courses mandatory for young people ages 12-16. That law is now in effect. There are a lot of specifics that need to be read and followed if you are going to have a child operate a boat or personal watercraft on Oklahoma waters. In the interest of safety, the Oklahoma U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary could not be more proud of the State of Oklahoma for recognizing the need for boating safety. We believe the next step will be the requirement of persons of all ages to take safety courses before being allowed to operate a vessel on Oklahoma waters.
Free Boat Oklahoma State authorized courses will be available for this year on an as needed basis. The ones held previously were highly successful and everyone came away with a better understanding of their role in boating safety. Although it is only mandatory at this time for younger people, it would be in everyones best interest to sign up for a course and attend before it becomes mandatory, and you have to get educated on Oklahoma State's time schedule. As an added bonus, Insurance companies most often reward people who take safety courses with substantial discounts on boating insurance.
Sign up sheets for classes are always available at the winter boat show. Feel free to contact your local flotilla for more information on boating safety courses, and free marine vehicle inspections.
Boat OK courses are offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for free! Make certain to send a copy of your course completion records to your marine insurance agent for appropriate insurance discounts.
Oklahoma City Flotilla 16-6 has offered several classes in past years. More will be scheduled as needed.
